There are clearly all the rites of passage, markers in life in life that everyone knows, understands and celebrates. This year approaching 65 years young I feel I am now a grown up. The marker in this instance is moving from excellent Kantu 4s, which have been wonderful and admired by others for many years, to the Big Red/DEQX combination. Fantastic out of the box it is difficult to see how much better they will be once run in and tuned to the room. Vinyl, CD SACD and DVD all have amazing amounts of sonic depth and clarity that I never knew was there.

I’ve owned a set of Joey 10 speakers for some months now and would like to show my appreciation. These speakers are fantastic and never cease to amaze me with their clarity and lack of colouration. Their frequency response is excellent and they easily fill my smallish listening area. The soundstage is spacious with transients being handled exceptionally. They accurately reproduce every genre of music I can throw at them and they don’t lose their composure with massed orchestral pieces. This is a real feat for speakers of such small dimensions! They’re also used in the front end of my home theatre setup with equally impressive results. I could not be happier with these speakers- thank you!

I hope you are keeping well.

Still very happy with the Kantu 10’s.  I have recently upgraded my amplifiers, I went for a Rotel pre and power amp combo and the increase in power from 80W from my old (NAD) integrated amp to the Rotel rated 200 W per channel (20 to 20,000 Hz, both channels driven) of the  power amp seems to do the Kantu’s much more justice.   I am not listening at higher volume, but the soundstage, clarity, smoothness and bass have notably improved.

A minor suggestion for possible future development, the cabinet would look even more classy if the ‘Legend’ logo on the front panel was ‘recessed’ a little into the (MDF?) board that it is adhered to.  Only a minor aesthetic detail.  Not sure how complex/costly this would be from a manufacturing viewpoint.

Just a quick note regarding my recently acquired Kurre 10s.

I’ve had them for over a month now and they have far exceeded my expectations.

Without going into too much detail, they are beautifully built, and sound wonderfully clean, natural and revealing.

I auditioned many loudspeakers, far more expensive than the Kurre 10s, and my dissatisfaction in them eventually lead me to Legend. Simply put, none of them moved me like the Kurre 10s.

I’m glad you asked me about the speakers (Kurre 10s).

The first couple of days after they arrived I thought I’d made a huge mistake. They were all over the place. A ton of reverb coming through. Harsh at times. At others; sublime. They seemed to be so technically correct in producing the sounds they were given that any real enjoyment was going to be hard to come by. I couldn’t get a handle on them. I thought they were like a couple of untrained brumbies leaping all over the place.

However, they have settled down and they are beautiful. Tone is truly magnificent. The clarity and differentiation of instruments is wonderful and they provide the greater bass I was after. The clarity of vocals is something, for some reason, I wasn’t expecting. All these songs I could never really clearly hear the lyrics of before – even through the Joeys ………… So, that’s the story so far. The Joeys were fantastic. The Kurres are even better. Noticeably better.

Just a quick note to say that I am very impressed with my Kantu 10’s which I purchased recently as an upgrade.  The sound is very natural and non-fatiguing and it’s as if the speakers have disappeared to make room for the music which has taken on a new dimension of depth, clarity and power.  During my research I listened to many other speakers at similar price points and beyond, including those from big name brands, but for me none of them came close to the Kantu’s.    Thank you!

I wanted to give you some feedback on the Kurlo.

Not having had a proper subwoofer before, it’s been a real joy to listen to and feel full-bodied bass in music and movies for the first time at home.

At the moment I’ve turned the volume up a bit more than my receiver’s recommended setting because the honeymoon phase hasn’t worn off yet so the EQ is a bit bass heavy at the moment. I imagine I will adjust it to normal levels in the future but for the moment I am enjoying the ride!

I finally managed to get my system going again with the Legend Kanga 8s and listened to a DSD128 copy of Radiohead’s In Rainbows and I was blown away. I only planned to listen to one song but ended up going through the whole album. Mind you this was the first time I played it bit perfect so that may have been contributing factor but never before have I heard such nuances and detail coming from a recording.

We have found that the Legend Mini make an excellent starter system where budget and space is limited. They seem equally at home with a small integrated amplifier or receiver but are good enough to reveal the differences between different amplifiers and sources at any price.

We put a pair of Legend Mini’s in our kitchen where they are used daily. Never do they sound anything but stellar in this role, even with modest electronics and low listening levels.

I have also found the Legend Minis have been very useful as a near-field monitor for location recording of classical music. Their size assists setting up in a tight spot and they provide a great deal of information, particularly in the all-important midrange area which makes it easy to judge microphone placement and the balance of instruments. They also provide excellent stereo imaging.

They are ideally paired with a Kurlette subwoofer if one wants to fill in the missing octaves.

The Kantu 8is speakers arrived this morning, I had them running at about 11:00am, they are absolutely outstanding, comparing them to the B&W 683’s, the definition & stereo image is better. If the aim was to produce speakers that would deliver a natural & realistic sound, Rod Crawford certainly has succeeded with the Kantu’s, they are just very musical to listen to, I’m getting a kick out of listening to a lot of my old CDs, very pleased with the purchase.

I’ve been enjoying the Kantu 8is immensely, even more so in the last week since a new Luxman SACD player arrived. Never heard an SACD disc and the first one played was Haydn, Sun Quartets by Chiaroscuro Quartet. Magnificent! I’m only just beginning my journey into classical music and am loving it so far.

The imaging is astonishing with these speakers, surpassing the performance of the earlier 6’s. I’m aware that bookshelf speakers are meant to outperform floor standing speakers in this respect, however, these Kantu’s are extraordinary. Their performance with SACD’s is deeply impressive and no doubt the Luxman player and amplifier are helping with this.

I’ve penned my thoughts on the Kurre’s below. Needless to say they’re wonderful speakers.

The Kurre 8s represent the best investment in hi-fi I’ve made in years. Reviews praising their accurate and detailed sonics may give the prospective buyer only a partial idea of what these speakers do. The first words that come to my mind are ‘balanced’ and ‘musical’. Once thing is certain: the magic lies in the crossover and a perfectly integrated set of drivers. The Kurre’s have that rare ability to throw up a full, holographic soundstage where instruments are simply ‘there’ in perfect balance. No part of the frequency band leaps out at you. This is an attribute of only the best (read – espensive!) speakers, in my experience.

Tonality is also superb. There’s none of that stripped-down, thinly rendered timbre so common in fashionable slim-line speakers of today. Through the Kurre’s a plucked double-bass sounds full, with that slightly tubby, woody quality of the real thing. In electronic music, synths are rich and low notes deep and powerful. Play some Deep Purple or Jimi Hendrix and Gibsons and Stratcocasters don’t merely pierce the ear with treble but actually have colour.

After attending a host of classical concerts this year at the SSO and, more pertinently, solo piano recitals by Garrick Ohlsson and Pierre-Laurent Aimard, I set out on the search for new speakers. As many know, acoustic piano can quickly show up a speaker’s shortfalls, particularly around the crossover point. Many revered brands fail miserably as piano notes reach that octave above Middle C and begin to ‘ping’ and ‘twang’ unnaturally; the Kurre’s, however, delight the ear across every register. And set up properly with front baffles around 1m from the wall, they also portray large orchestras realistically.

The Kurre 8s are great, you were right, they needed 10 hours run in time. I now find them to be an outstanding set of speakers, in my time I’ve owned various speakers, AR 18s, JBL 3 way, B&W 685s, although these have all been good, the Kurre’s are better, they have a full natural bass, good definition & image, they are just pleasant to listen to. I certainly don’t regret buying them & I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend them to anyone, with the jarrah veneer finish they look classy & have a sound to match.

A quick note to let you know that I’ve finally got my Joeys up & running after moving house late last year. They sound, in a word, fantastic – even in my new, less than ideally shaped living room. My NAD amp is fine to run with them with as you suggested & I’m hearing things on CDs I’ve listened to literally 100s of times that I’ve never heard before. Bravo! Ten out of ten all around!!
Thank you for creating such a brilliant speaker at such a reasonable price. I know of no other speaker out there that comes close to matching the Joeys in either quality, performance or craftsmanship.

Dear Rod

I had previously been using good quality large floor-standers from a respected and awarded English firm, with quality Marantz components (SA11S1 CDP, SC11S1 preamp and SM11S1 power amps). I was quite happy with the sound quality, but not entirely satisfied.

I knew to expect a pleasant improvement with the Big Reds, having previously bought a pair of your Joey monitors. However, the characteristics of the Big Reds were immediately and stunningly evident. They accorded with your description of being fast, open and natural.

I listen to mostly acoustic music, classical and jazz , but also a bit of rock. One of my test CDs is an Etta James album with Billie Holiday songs. It was the first album I listened to on the Big Reds. The speakers gave me a feeling of being present at the performance with a deep and wide soundstage and everything from her voice to the reedy saxophone and cymbals were crystal clear and real. The speakers disappeared to leave me looking at the performance stage. Other speakers I have used all tend to both compress the sound and to separate streams of sound; they give you the feeing of reporting the music so that you are conscious of being one step removed from it. The Big Reds do not report, they reproduce; you are there as the event happens.

The Big Reds let you hear all the detail in a harmonious whole which sounds natural and real. I tend to critique other speakers while listening to music, (probably because they have fallen short in one or more respects), whereas with the Big Reds you are hearing everything at once and can listen to individual instruments within the entirety, without the urge to pick which driver is doing what or how well. In other words, for the first time I was listening to music and not the speakers.

These speakers faithfully reproduce the material they are fed. Good recordings are marvellous and detailed. Despite the extraordinary detail these speakers reproduce, lesser recordings are shown gently rather than ruthlessly punished although bad recordings, as you would expect, are exposed for what they are. In other words, anything you are likely to want to listen to, or are used to listening to, will be enjoyed.

All the music I listen to sounds good on these speakers. Choral music is outstanding. I have a friend who has been in the hi-fi business for 35 years and has in the past owned equipment costing a fortune. He listens to a lot of jazz and good vocals. When he arrived for a first listen one Sunday I had on some Bach cantatas and when I came back with the coffee, I offered to put some more usual music on but he requested I leave the cantatas on; he said it was like being there and he was entranced listening to the different voices. It was a while before we listened to any of his usual preferences.

I think the above gives the general picture. I listened to these speakers for nearly a year. The others lay idle. I learned in October of your Aketha version, where a DEQX is used with Big Reds in a semi-active configuration. Given the reviews of DEQX with your speakers, that there was solid science behind the idea, and that the outlay for the DEQX Express is modest compared with what many spend on cables, I decided to try . Last month the DEQX was installed and the corrections done by Alan from DEQX running the tuning software on my computer remotely from Sydney. The improvement in sound quality was striking. It is not at all scientific to try to quantify a perceived (as opposed to measured) improvement in percentages, but as a rough indication I would say the improvement was in the order of 15-20%. The Aketha version brings uncanny clarity and focus and a very clean lively sound. When I can steel myself for a short period without the Akethas, I will probably return them to you to dismantle the crossovers and have them running in fully active mode from the DEQX.

I am delighted to have found speakers and a correction device made by music lovers with scientific and technical qualifications and experience. In a market awash in snake oil , it is nice to get components which do what they are held out to do.

I just bought the Kurres about an hour ago from the HiFi Trader at Newtown. I took along some of my CDs – The Audreys, Suzzane Vega & Holly Throsby – to test them. Vega’s ‘Nine Objects of Desire’ is full of deep bass tunes so I chose that CD specifically to test bass. The Kurre’s handled bass beautifully – deep and fast – and more powerfully than my Joey 2s obviously. Not overwhelmingly so, as I believe bass should be subtle and well controlled.
What convinced me on the Kurre 7s was a quiet vocal passage by Tasha Coats from The Audreys. I can’t quite describe it but when the instruments quietened, Tasha’s gorgeous vocals came to the fore with such thrilling clarity. It made me sit up and notice immediately – not even my fabulous Joey 2s could manage that. The speakers were connected to a Roksan integrated amp and Roksan CD player but not bi-wired. I’ll be bi-wiring them with my ME 25 Preamp and ME 240 integrated that I use as a power amp. I can only imagine how they will sound with my equipment and once they are ‘run in’.
May I also mention the build quality – I noticed that straight away as I’m extremely fussy about such things. On this last point, which partly comes back to my original email question, the quality is extraordinary and don’t know how you manage to sell them for so little money.

Never before have I felt that I was unlimited by my sound system until now.

Early on I had mixed feelings about the Tikandi and DEQX combination. However I have come to the conclusion that any doubts I had early on were more a result of such a dramatic change to the way the system now sounds versus what we were listening to before-hand.

To draw a simple parallel, it was like a few years ago when I had my eyes tested and found I needed glasses – the subsequent wearing brought so much new detail to my visual senses that for a while some discomfort ensued. However, removal of the optical correctives brings an immediate feeling of ‘how did I live with that?’ amazement.

This combination of DEQX and Tikandi’s is incredibly precise… almost painfully so at first. Like the discomfort from the glasses, it has taken some getting used to. It’s been frustrating to hear the dramatic differences in album productions – giving rise to almost anger at some producers and a feeling of “Damn it! Why didn’t you take more care!” This in itself a great testament to how accurate a delivery we are now receiving.

Other recordings, where due care has been taken, are a revelation. The system soars – when things get busy there is no sense of the space collapsing around individual instruments or the dynamics compressing – everything just enlarges as it would were the artists present and playing live.

Whether the speakers are improving as they run-in or if it’s simply my head growing accustomed to the sensory increase I cannot say with certainty, but what I can express with absolute certainty is that I am completely blown away with how good the system is sounding, and if anyone tried to take any of these pieces from me they’d have quite a fight on their hands. An interesting position considering my initial feelings of doubt.

Gent’s, I think you have a remarkable combination of products here and I couldn’t be happier. To this end I wish to express my sincerest gratitude to you both.

The Small Reds produce a fast and transparent sound with a big holographic soundstage. Like I said, compared to my Kurres, they’re in a different league (as they should be). They also look pretty good in my room, much better in the flesh than in photos.

Your Tikandi/DEQX demo has certainly given me a lot to think about. In the meantime I’ll keep enjoying the Small Reds, which I won’t hesitate to recommend to anyone who asks.

I had another much more analytical listen of the Kantus.

It really is a tremendous speaker – bass was very clean and articulate and tight. Vocals were detailed and smooth. And that tweeter is also very clean and detailed but not harsh or edgy or too soft or artificially sweet. I was very impressed that the bass did not bloom in their small listening area.

Its easily the best speaker I have heard at its price point.

The speakers Kantus have arrived safely and I have them up and playing. They really look neat with the jarrah fronts and they are easier on the ears (than my Kantu 4s). In the short time I have had to listen to them they are not edgy and more relaxing so that is what I was looking for. I am glad I decided to to go with the 6s.

i) two people, of the better gender, have remarked on the very pleasing appearance of the speakers (these are two very home-design-aware people and, thankfully, one is my wife)
ii) Cathy, aforementioned wife, is thrilled with the sound, particularly its clarity at a lower volume than needed with the Kantu 4’s.

I consider their comments to be doubly high praise as they have no ‘allegiance’ to the hifi world…

And the Kantu 4’s are now doing superb service in my workplace – and they hum (in a good way)!

I’ve finally found a little time to provide some feedback on the passive Big Reds I recently purchased. I must say that this is the best money I’ve spent in hifi ever and I’ve spent a bit on the hobby over the years. About a year ago I stupidly sold a pair of Kantu 3’s and have been missing them ever since. I regretted the decision to sell but it seems now that it was a blessing in disguise as I’d never have found these Reds. I’m powering the speakers from an integrated amp with the sub amps doing their thing with the bottom end. A number of sources are being used including vinyl, cd, streamed music and HT. The Reds excel with everything put to them, even compressed FM. These speakers are certainly the most revealing speaker I’ve ever owned including the Kantu 3’s. Although they are revealing they are never ever too forward or bright. The ceramic tweeter really is a work of art providing intimate detail but never going too far. The midrange is to die for and the bottom end just goes about its business without fuss but when called for has all the fanfare expected. The only way to go up from here is to make them fully active which may be at some stage in the distant future. For the time being I’m more than happy with them the way they are. Great product and highly recommended.

When we heard your Kantu speakers we were blown away with them. The price was over our budget but we just had to have them. They were worth every cent and more. They go beautifully with our Rotel 1070 cd the RC 1090 preamp and the RB 1080 amplifier. What a sound, we enjoy them so much. We would like to thank you and Carlton Audio as their service and patience helped us purchase these fantastic Kantu 4 speakers.</>

I was very impressed with the system – the speakers were very detailed and accurate and (too my ear) outperformed a set of Paradigm Signature 8s that I had auditioned yesterday.

I got the Kurres home safely and listened to them Tuesday night. First listen was not very exciting; I noticed I had to turn up the volume higher compared to my Krix bookshelf (Sensitivity 88dB) and the sound was relatively restrained. After a couple of hours, I realized how well balanced these speakers are. I’ve owned a handful of the top-reviewed speakers in the past 8 years (priced $1500 or below) and these are the most balanced stand-mounts I’ve heard.

I’ve read much about Legend Speakers’ “fast, open, natural sound” and thought the Kurre 5s would sound “bright” with my Rotel gear. The sound was actually noticeably warmer than my old speakers. The Kurre 5’s also had a smoother and yet more detailed sound. I was slow to realise but became more impressed the more I listened. Soon it was 3:00am Wednesday morning and I had to get some sleep to wake up for work. Thank you very much for this speaker design, I may have found it (the sound I’ve been looking for).

well I finally got the Joeys home and hooked up in the room that we had purchased them for. It’s a small room – our bedroom cum office in fact – and has one wall completely glass, so I thought it might be difficult.

I’m completely blown away, and that’s putting it mildly. They sound so fantastic. They are just the right choice for the room because we don’t want thumping volume, just articulate, accurate speakers. I listened to a whole range of music – Gershwin, Bach, Bernie McGann, Katie Melua, Dire Straits – it all sounded fantastic. That old saying “I heard things I didn’t know were on the CD” proved to be absolutely true.

I suspect that many of us have forgotten what the “fidelity” bit of Hi Fi actually means. We don’t often get the “accurate” or “truthful” rendition that the word suggests. Instead we get a muddied and warmed interpretation. With the Joeys I got a real sense that I was getting “true fidelity”. Whilst that’s a bit of a tautology it also emphasises exactly what is being delivered.

Just thought I’d update you on my experience with the Legend Kantu speakers. I have put my had much deeper into my pocket than expected and bought a Primare I30. I chose the Primare after extensive evaluation and it seemed to be a terrific match for the Kantus with its smooth yet detailed nature. I had a preliminary listen last night and was blown away by what the Kantus can really do. I was initially impressed with my HT receiver powering the speakers but there is really no comparison. If anybody is considering Dr Rod’s fantastic speakers make sure you use the best possible amplification you can afford. These speakers really deserve the best signal they can get.

I’ve had a lot of speakers over the years including currently Quad 22L and formerly Osborn Interlude, Epos M22, Interdyn BT2, Energy Pro 22 and TDL T lines. (edit: I just realised I must be attracted to the ’22’ models) The Kantus are by far the best and are definitely keepers. I have been reduced to using a very good Marantz DVD player and a Harman HT receiver to power them as I had to sell my cd and integrated to fund the purchase of the Kantus. This current combination is more than satisfactory but as I first heard them with Benchmark amps, Cyrus pre and Chord CD/Dac combo I just won’t be able to help myself!

Just dropping you a line to let you know that the Kamas were delivered last Thursday as arranged. I had a read of the (very well detailed!) manual and hooked them up accordingly, bi-wiring from the Exposure 2010 with Linn cable.

WOW!!! I was gobsmacked. Those solid little speakers sound beautiful. The music just flowed, the midrange is drop dead georgeous, the bass fast and solid. Tom Waits sounds so real I swear I can smell his cigarette! These speakers are punching well above their weight compared to the imported brands, I’ve heard nothing to compare to them for less than three grand.

We purchased a pair of Kantus from Carlton Audiovisual last year, as the first stage of an ongoing upgrade to our stereo system. We are both professional musicians (Melbourne Symphony Orchestra) and we were immediately bowled over by your speakers’ natural sound. That they clearly out-performed any other speaker we auditioned goes without saying, as we didn’t hesitate to buy them despite their being significantly beyond our initial budget. Since then, we have not regretted our decision for a minute.

I cannot make observations of a technical nature, but wanted simply to report that to these ears, which hear a live orchestra in a good acoustic almost every day, the Kantus sound uncannily like the real thing. They possess a rightness in both treble and bass and in a sense of acoustic and ambience, which makes recorded music an involving, satisfying and often thrilling experience. Subsequent upgrades to our turntable cartridge and power supply have vindicated our choice of your speakers at every stage. Our Kantus are begging for better amplification, but even our humble 10 year-old Marantz amp (PM-66signatureSE) seems to allow them to sing.

We’re sure that the Kantus will remain a part of our lives for many years. Thank you for a very special product. It is not only a bargain, but a life-enhancing joy to have in our home.

My wife and I have just purchased a pair of your Kantus speakers ( KT 527) and we are absolutely delighted with their performance. We had been wedded to a pair of Tannoy Saturn 10’s for years. We are glad that we made the change – we were most surprised with the bass produced by the Kantus. Prior to purchasing the Kantus we auditioned B&W’s and Focal JM – LABS, nearing twice the price, and frankly we were unimpressed.

I finally took your advice and biwired the Kurres with the Naim 250, despite Naim’s recommendations (using Naim speaker cable).

It certainly is, as you say, a very nice improvement. Separation of instruments, better grip on the bass, and generally more lifelike all round.

They really are the most fantastic little speakers.

I have purchased a pair of Kurre 4s, a Kurka 4 centre and a Kurlette sub a couple of weeks ago. After a couple of day spent mainly on cosmetics (making sure cables are precision cut to their required lengths, right angles etc.) I have turned my AV system on.

And haven’t turned it off since….. After 15 minutes of watching my over-used AV test title (BladeRunner), I had to remind myself that I am not watching it in the post production studio! The speakers simply “disappeared” into a balanced, accurate and wholesome sphere of sounds and music!

I have already started packing my stereo speakers (a separate set of Wharfedale Opus’ driven by an ARCAM array of Pre, PA and a CD player) in preparation for replacing them with a pair of Kantu’s.

I’ve been using the Kurres for a couple of days now and they are superb, in a different league to the Spendors altogether.

They work well with the Naim gear and produce by far the most open, dynamic and lifelike sound I’ve heard in my home.
